Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) have been around since 1972, when the Regenstrief Institute created the first electronic medical record system. In 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was introduced by congress, prompting medical organizations to shift over to electronic systems. The proliferation of web-based systems in the early 2000’s made data both more affordable and more accessible to the healthcare industry and its patients, and in 2014 the call for an industry-wide adoption of electronic health record systems resulted in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
